Keswick Camping and Caravanning Club Site, Keswick

The Lake District has a special place in the hearts of many UK campers and there is so much that will appeal to even the fussiest fan of outdoor life. For Mark and Janette Songhurst it’s the opportunity to escape to the hills, to enjoy water sports on the lakes and rivers, or just sitting watching the world go by or a gentle stroll and a pint. The Site

Keswick Camping and Caravanning Club, The Lake District, UK

The Lake District has so many campsites that it becomes difficult to decide where to stay. But, if like us, The Camping and Caravanning Club site at Keswick may be your ideal for access to the site is easy – the short journey from the M6 uses good A-roads and you are soon at one of the most amazing site in the northern Lakes.

It is stunning here. The large site sits on the banks of Derwentwater and has wide views of the surrounding fells and mountains.

From talking to the Holiday Site Managers, a lot of work has been put into this site. Most important for campers the toilets and showers are warm, tidy, and amazingly clean. The washing up areas are well thought out and sensibly protected from the elements with plastic cladding.

For a large site there are plenty of facilities, however, one point to consider the Club will not let you reserve pitches therefore please be warned you could end up being a long way from the toilets and showers.

The majority of the pitches are hard standing if you are going to use them we would recommend taking a thick rubberised footprint and rock pegs as we found the chippings used are sharp to walk on.

The only other thing is that the site can flood, the team and site are prepared for this, but is does mean that grass pitches are not always available.

The area

The area itself needs very little introduction. You are a short walk into Keswick for shopping, a meal or to try out one of the many pubs. Also if you are looking for outdoor clothing then you have hit the jackpot there are lots of bargains to be had in what is probably Britain’s most highly populated area for outdoor shops.

And a short walk off the site will get you onto many walks in the surrounding area. And if you are more water-based you can launch your dinghy, canoe or kayak from the site for a small charge and get tuition at Derwent Water Marina. If this sounds too energetic, lake views are superb from the Keswick Launch. Check to see if there are any discounts at the site’s reception.

If real ales are your thing then book a trip to the Keswick Brewery. The brewery tour is very different and the beers are brilliant. As a good Yorkshireman it makes me weep that I have to recommend something from the wrong side of the Pennines. Still, it could be worse…

  • Whinlatter’s Go Ape is now rivalled by the Via Ferrata experience at Honister slate mine.
  • Check out The Puzzling Place in the centre of Keswick
  • You have to see the World’s largest pencil at Keswick’s Pencil Museum
  • Drop by the English Heritage, Carlisle and Penrith castles
  • Try your hand at pottery and crafts at Craft Monkey

Eating Out

There are lots of options for food in Keswick from take-away to pubs and restaurants. For once we were good and ate in for the weekend so we cannot recommend from experience.

Eating Local

We gather there is a Farmers’ Market twice a week in Keswick but can personally confirm the local beer from Keswick Ales is really good.
